Nurses¢¥ Reactions Towards Night Duty


Abstract
Nurses on night duty care for about the patients through the hours when less health professionals, both in number and discipline, are on duty. These content intensify the demands more responsibilities on nursing personnel; their physical fitness and psychological aptness are essential components to meet the demands.
This study was¢¥ designed to assess the nurses perception on the influences of night duty on their health and the reaction towards being on "night duty in general. 208 nurses, currently are recently were, on night duty at five general hospitals; two in Seoul and 3 from other cities, were sampled. Data were gathered through questionnaires developed by the researchers from September 1976 to January 1977.
Results are as follows;
1. Reactions on willingness of being night duty revealed that; 42.8%¢¥ responded that there is no other alternatives, 26.9% were extremely negative while 23. 1% showed professional attitude. Perception of their physical health varied in that 59.6% revealed positive and 44.2% of the subjects extremely negative.
2. Amongst the advantages of being on night duty, "day hours could be utilized for some other purposes" and "interpersonal conflicts are eliminated minimized" revealed to be highest(35.1%). Amongst the disadvantages, "deviation from health" revealed to be paramount (72.1%). 35.1% revealed to be disturbed interrupted while 4.8% more or less satisfied by sleeping after night duty. The average daily sleeping hour of night duty nurses revealed to be 4-6 hours.
3. Majority of subjects revealed to take meals twice daily(75.5%), usually omit lunch(85.6%) and quite a few of the subject (42. 8%) lost appetite.

Night duty influenced defecation(52.4%=constipated), weight(53.8%=loss) and skin condition(33.2%=acne, discoloration: on the face).
4. The hours from 4 A.M. to 5 A.M. revealed to be most sleepy hours(49. a %), 3 A.M. to 4 A.M. the most hungry (34.1%). 29.8% respond ended that there are hours of lesser direct nursing demands during the night hours and they plan and carry out some other tasks for the ward. 25.5% responded that there are no such leisure hours. Post-night duty fatigue revealed to be; "general fatigue" as the first in the rank order amongst the(67.3%) physical aspect, "even decline to think at all" as the first(47.6%) amongst the psychological aspect.
5. Opinions on the length of night duty revealed that 1 week(52. 7%) as most adjustable. 56.7% wished to be on day duty following night duty; because they thought that they could go back to normal life" (72.9%). 42.3% wished to be on evening duty, because they postnight duty fatigues are easily recovered.
